His father, James Watkins, has been a preacher for more than 57 years and is featured on a nationwide television ministry called Preaching The Gospel with James Watkins. This program airs in Decatur on Sunday mornings at 7:00 on Fox 54. Alan's brother, Bill, is the preacher at Crieve Hall church in Nashville, TN. Alan has served churches in Alabama, Florida, Georgia, and Tennessee as well as conducted many revival meetings. He has traveled numerous times to Guyana, South America on mission trips. He graduated from Freed-Hardeman University in 1976 with a Bachelors degree in Bible. He earned a Master of Arts degree in Old Testament Theology in 1991 at Southern Christian University. He is an avid sportsman especially with interests in hunting, fishing and enyoys a round of golf when time permits.
Alan began with the Grant Street congregation in June of 2002. He is energized about the opportunities that Decatur offers to his family and to the Grant Street church. "Grant Street is a loving and compassionate family of people with a long and glorious history. However, I am more excited about the future of this great congregation than her past. Though we may not be the largest religious group in town, rest assured there are no larger hearts anywhere than right here at Grant Street. This family has a loving and forgiving spirit. Combining that with Gods blessings that accrue to those who love and serve him, we have a fantastic future down this road we call life.
We are enthusiastic about the possibilities presented as a result of our working together with Alan and Janice. We believe that even though we have been in our current location since 1925, our best days are yet to come!
